Everything is Better in the Bahamas!‏ (January 12, 2009 3:29:47 AM)

Well, we made it! We have arrived in the beautiful Bahamas!

We arrived in Port Lucaya, just east of Freeport on Tuesday. We cleared customs without any problems and Steve our captain departed for the US. We were exhausted and spent the next day cleaning up our boat and preparing for the next leg of our journey. Thursday morning we left for Great Harbour in the Berry Island. We had a beautiful day motor sailing, it was great to be on our own! Greg and Dylan have figured out the sails, Brett and I the GPS Chart Plotter and navigation. We arrived there late afternoon and anchored for the night. Friday morning we left for Nassau, and arrived there Friday afternoon, another day of smooth motor sailing. The marina we had hoped to stay at was full, so we attempted anchoring. There is limited anchorage available in Nassau Harbour so after three hours of frustration, we bit the bullet and ended up at a pricier marina on Paradise Island called Hurricane Hole. It is a beautiful spot, with a pool, laundry facilities, showers, etc. We kind of stand out like a sore thumb, as all the other boats here are big white plastic shiny boats, probably worth upwards of 2-3 million dollars.

Saturday morning was busy. Greg unplugged the aft head (shitty job but someone has to do it!), and sorted out the anchoring system so it wouldn’t jam up. We sorted out more of our supplies and repacked. Dad arrived safe and sound Saturday afternoon, Greg picked him up at the airport. It is so awesome to have him here! He is enjoying the warm weather, and getting to know the boat. He looks great. Yesterday Greg worked at getting the water maker serviced and ready to go. The water maker will turn seawater into fresh water for use on the boat. He also replaced the “McGivored” refrigeration pump with the new one we picked up in Ft. Lauderdale so that is all sorted out.

Today we plan to leave for Eleuthera Island at about 8:00 this morning. We are headed for a spot called Spanish Wells, tucked inside the island where we can anchor and check things out. We want to get there early as we have to get the dinghy in the water and put the kicked on her. It is raining right now, it has been incredibly humid. I think the high yesterday was 30!

We will email again later in the week when we can get internet, and send some photos. Love and miss you all! Sure don’t miss MINUS 30 degree weather though! This plus stuff is great!!!!

Love from the Dutch Dreamers and stow away Harvey
