Hi all:
Trust a Van Wyck to find any excuse to eat. Well, we decided that in spite of thoroughly enjoying two family Thanksgiving feasts in Canada in October, we would join the rest of God Bless America and celebrate it here too!
The day before Thanksgiving the boys and I drove to historic downtown Charleston for the first time, and shopped at a somewhat upscale grocery store called Harris Teeter (must be a US chain?) We heard about it from a fellow boater and just had to check it out. Complete with a Starbucks and shopping carts with cup holders, this store gives new meaning to shopping in comfort. When we were done, we drove along the waterfront, and down some very narrow cobblestone streets, with gas lanterns, palmetto trees, bushes and flowers everywhere, very green. We walked down to where we saw a fountain and some benches, got hot dogs from a vendor for lunch and enjoyed the sunshine and the scenery.
On Thanksgiving Day, 65 degrees and sunny, adorned in my ``Desperate Housewines” T-Shirt, Capris and my new comfy flip-flop crocs, I cooked a “Boat Style” Thanksgiving Dinner: a 7.5 lb. stuffed turkey breast, homemade mashed potatoes, gravy, a can of cranberries, and fresh asparagus (for $1.49!) and it was yummy! Oh, and did I mention I made Key Lime Pie for dessert? This is the south, after all!
While I slaved away in the galley, Greg has been busy on his latest project. He finished his nasty job of digging, scraping and painting in the bowels of the beast and oh, did I mention, left the cleaning to me! I don`t mind actually, as I love cleaning, and technically, it is in my job description as Galley Wench. So I vacuumed, and washed, and scrubbed, and it`s all clean and put back together again! I am soooo glad to have our aft stateroom looking a little more ``stately``, and a working head and shower.
So what`s the Captain`s latest project... well he has been stripping! Oh, get your mind out of the gutter! My George Clooney has been stripping the varnish off the helm area, and doing a great job. I took a before picture so when he is done I will send you the before and after photos. He had to take a break though, as our weekend was rainy and stormy. He can’t just sit around though, so still accomplished a lot inside the boat, organizing his tools, going through all the cubby holes to see what’s there, and he finished polishing our brass lamp. All of us managed to get a bit of a cold/flu bug on the weekend too, but are now feeling a lot better.
Yesterday we did some shopping and errands, and today I am getting caught up on laundry. We are back to sunshine, and temps in the mid fifties. It looks like a nice week, and perfect weather for Greg to continue his work outside on the boat, not too hot suits him just fine. We are going to stay here for another 2-3 weeks, we still have so much to do. We are hoping to be in Florida for Christmas, we will just see how things go. It is so handy having the truck here, and to be at a marina that doesn’t mind us working on our boat.
Take care, keep warm and keep those emails coming.
Lots of love from the Dutch Dreamers
